Nyjer Morgan collides with Brett Hayes at homeplate on August 31, 2010 during the game between the Florida Marlins and Washington Nationals
The baseball game between the Florida Marlins and Washington Nationals on August 31, 2010 saw Nyjer Morgan colliding with Marlins catcher Brett Hayes during a close play at the plate. The video of the collision can be seen below.
Hayes was badly shaken up, so the following night, Volstad issued the customary retaliation by plunking Morgan. Morgan, after taking his base in, an at the time, 15-5 Marlins lead, proceeded to steal both 2nd and 3rd base. Morgan ultimately scored. This was interpreted as unacceptable and unnecessary baseball etiquette considering the score at the time. Volstad, in the 7th inning of game on September 1, 2010, threw behind Morgan which fueled the brawl.
